Job Announcement: Bishop Museum

COLLECTION TECHNICIAN – Archaeology (PT)

Bishop Museum invites applications for a part-time (20 hours per week) archaeology technician in the Department of Anthropology. Major duties include: archaeological documentation research and data entry to enhance database records. Support and assist in archaeology collection documentation as delegated by a supervising staff member(s). Participate in collection inventory, including artifact inventory, description and analysis, and digitization of associated field documents. Prepare artifacts for display or other educational activities. Participate in collection tours and special presentations; assist in maintenance of all collections in storage and display.

B.A. in Archaeology (or Anthropology) required, but higher degree is desired. Previous database management and metadata organization skills are highly desired.

Job Posting:

Project Archaeologist

Southeastern Archaeological Research, Inc. (SEARCH) is seeking full-time Project Archaeologist to support several multi-year projects. The position will be based out of SEARCH’s office in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Applicants should be able to travel to projects across Hawai‘i, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Mainland, and elsewhere. Applicants should have archaeological experience in Hawai‘i, and already reside locally or be willing to relocate to the area at their own expense. Applicants should also demonstrate an ability and willingness to work in a laboratory and assist with report preparation and production. There is room for advancement for high caliber applicants.

Applicants should have:

--MA in Anthropology or related field

--Completion of a regional archaeology field school

--Training in artifact processing, identification, and analysis

--Additional skill sets in related disciplines (land survey, Trimble GPS operation, heavy equipment operation, GIS, CAD, photography, cartography, etc.)

--Five years field experience

--Laboratory experience

--Superior technical writing ability

--Fluency in MS Office software suite

--Proven history of ensuring a safe working environment for themselves and others

-- Strong field and outdoors skill set; ability to work in physically demanding environments

--Ability to work well in a team environment

The successful applicant will be highly organized, be able to meet deadlines, and have attention to detail. Experience in cultural resource management and experience working on DoD projects is preferred. This position is not suitable for applicants with schedule limitations or travel limitations.

Unfortunately, the schedule is now full and there is no more room for any new papers to be submitted, although I can accept poster submissions. Job Announcement UH Hilo

Junior Specialist S2, Heritage Center Coordinator. Position number 73400, UH Hilo, College of Continuing Education and Community Service, Heritage Center Coordinator, full-time, general funds, non-tenure track to begin approximately January 1, 2011.

Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Director of the North Hawai‘i Education and Research Center (NHERC, located in Honoka‘a, HI) of the College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS), University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, the Coordinator will develop and operate the Heritage Center at NHERC. This individual will play the lead role in the planning of the Heritage Center both physically and virtually. In serving as curator, the coordinator will recommend acquisitions, organize exhibitions, and develop and deliver activities that will encourage broad appreciation for North Hawaii Heritage. In addition, position will oversee the management and care of collections and the curatorial and pedagogical activities; and work cooperatively with the research requests from other scholars and museums. In a leadership capacity, the coordinator will represent the Heritage Center to the community, businesses, and local and state leaders and will be the visible spokesperson for the heritage center locally, regionally and nationally. In collaboration with educational institutions, other entities such as museums and historical societies, and governmental agencies, the Coordinator will develop an interactive, virtual heritage center to further the Heritage center’s activities and extend educational reach into classrooms and homes. In collaboration with UH faculty, students and other interested organizations, the Coordinator will develop and deliver programming (classes, lectures, seminars, films and exhibitions, research) to support the preservation and dissemination of the history and heritage of North Hawaii. Additionally, the coordinator will assist in identifying potential donors and partners for short- and long-term initiatives that ensure the future of the Heritage center; oversee fundraising and marketing efforts specific to the Heritage Center; write and /or collaborate grant writing; and prepare operating budget and makes budgetary recommendations in concurrence with the NHERC Director. Professional responsibilities will also include coordinating student research and possibly instructing an occasional credit or non-credit class.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in History, Anthropology, Hawaiian Studies, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university; one year of experience in project management within a heritage center or museum; demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and/or supervise research and development activities; proven successful grant writing experience in the past obtaining private, state and/or federal grant monies; ability to interact effectively with students and/or associates when appropriate; ability to speak effectively in public; ability to work within a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment; demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously and to successfully balance competing priorities and deadlines; comfortable in cultivating donors and asking for gifts.

Desirable Qualifications: Doctoral degree in History, Anthropology, Hawaiian Studies, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university; experience teaching credit classes; extensive experience in project management within a heritage center or museum; experience with the start up organization of heritage centers and/or museums; knowledge of North Hawaii communities, history, literature and culture; demonstrated ability to work effectively with university faculty, students, professional staff, and the community; demonstrated high-level organizational skills; experience in academic program development; strong understanding and appreciation for cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.

Job Announcement - Palau HPO

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Palau Historic Preservation Office Job Announcement

POSITION: Republic of Palau (PALAU) Consulting Archaeologist

CLOSING DATE: until filled

LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT: To be negotiated from one to two years

SALARY RANGE: Between $37,000 and $41,000

HOUSING: Housing will be provided in addition to salary.

LOCATION AND SUPERVISION: This is a national level position funded by a Historic Preservation Fund Grant administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. In carrying out the duties herein described compliance with all applicable U.S. Federal laws and regulations governing the Historic Preservation Fund Grant is required.

The major Islands of the Republic of Palau (PALAU) are located in the Pacific Ocean between five and ten degrees north of the Equator, approximately 2, 500 miles west by southwest of Hawaii, and approximately 600 miles north of New Guinea. Temperatures and humidity are typical of tropical islands near the Equator. Shopping and medical facilities are limited. Public schools are available to residents but educational standards vary and most classes are taught in local languages. A small number of private schools are available. English is widely spoken but the local language is Palauan and is used for many government meetings and all community events. Applicant must be able to adapt to differences in culture, relative isolation, environmental conditions, and relatively higher prices for imported goods.

TRAVEL: Approved official travel between Palau will be paid for by the employment agency. Should the Archaeologist originate from a foreign country the employee’s initial travel to Palau and final return to the origin country will be paid for by the employing agency. The moving costs of Household Goods will also be paid for by the employing agency.

DUTIES: The Palau Consulting Archaeologist will serve as the nation’s technical expert on archaeology and historic preservation providing guidance and expert recommendations at both the State and National levels. The duties of the Consulting Archaeologist will assist or guide the following activities of the Historic Preservation Offices:

1) Meeting any requirements of U.S. National Park Service Program Assessments.

2) Training Historic Preservation Office staff in archaeology and cultural resource management to enable them to be as knowledgeable, self-sufficient and self-directed as possible in carrying out their mission.

3) Developing, coordinating and carrying out plans for archaeological surveys and test excavations.

4) Establishing and maintaining centralized cultural resources inventories and registration systems.

5) Monitoring ground disturbing projects.

6) Assessing the condition and evaluating the significance of a variety of cultural resources.

7) Cultural resource management planning in coordination with State and National Government Agencies and the U.S. National Park Service.

8) Designing and managing cultural resource museum and laboratory facilities.

9) Designing and maintaining electronic cultural resources database.

10) Ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the U.S. National Historic Preservation Act and implementing regulations 36 CFR 800 with regard to U.S. Federal undertakings in the PALAU.

11) Writing Project and Program reports and,

12) Other archaeological and cultural resource management duties as assigned.

13) Write report for each survey carried out in each respective PALAU State and write report on the Archaeology Program for each PALAU State at the end of the period for each island where the Archaeologist works.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant must have a graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field with a specialization in some applied field of Archaeology. The applicant must have a minimum of three years of full-time professional experience in applying theories, methods, and practices of Archaeology that enable professional and appropriate decisions to be made about the identification, evaluation, documentation, registration and treatment of historic and cultural properties. The applicant must demonstrate successful application of acquired proficiencies in Archaeology to the practice of historic preservation, and the ability to carry research to completion. Preference will be given to applicants with a specialization and field experience in Pacific Prehistory, particularly that of Micronesia. The applicant must be fluent in English and be able to communicate at a professional level in English, both orally and in writing. The applicant must demonstrate competency in operation of computers and software relating to word processing, database, and Geographic Information System. The applicant must be in good health and be fully capable of undertaking extended archaeological fieldwork in rugged terrain, under adverse conditions including extreme heat and humidity.

Keala Pono Employment Announcement

Keala Pono Archaeological Consulting, LLC is seeking to fill part-time temporary archaeologist/ethnographer positions for work on Molokaʻi, Lanaʻi, and Oʻahu. Possible tasks include archival research, writing, conducting interviews for a cultural impact assessment, and assisting with archaeological inventory survey. Experience in one or more of these areas is preferred. Work will commence in July and run for approximately four months, although longer term employment opportunities are possible. Keala Pono offers flexible hours and competitive pay. Residents of Molokaʻi and Lanaʻi are encouraged to apply.

2010 SHA Conference Information

The Society for Hawaiian Archaeology 2010 Annual Conference will be held from Friday, October 15, through Sunday, October 17. The conference will be hosted at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel (http://www.alohabeachresortkauai.com/) in Wailuanuiaho‘ano, Kaua‘i (3-5920 Kuhio Hwy, Kapa‘a, HI 96746), adjacent to the Wailua River and Lydgate Park.

A call for papers will be forthcoming. Jenny Kahn has graciously accepted the duty of session organizer.

Also, we have reserved a small block of rooms at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel. Our group discount rate is $80 per night for a standard room (sleeps 2-4). The reserved rate is good only up to 30 days before our conference (not after Sept. 14), and also applies three days prior and after our conference date.

Call (808) 823-6000 for reservations (Monday – Friday from 8am - 4pm HST) and mention that you are attending the Society for Hawaiian Archaeology conference so you will receive our group discount rate.

Field trips are being discussed and we are open to suggestions as to where our members might want to visit on Kaua‘i. Perhaps some of our CRM members who work on Kaua‘i could kokua here. Some suggestions have been Ke‘e and Limahuli, Nu‘alolo Kai, Makauwahi Cave, National Tropical Botanical Garden (new research library), the archives of Kaua‘i (Kaua‘i Historical Society, Kaua‘i Museum, Grove Farm Museum), and/or ???????

We are also looking for a few student volunteers to help with the registration tables etc. Volunteers will have their conference fees waived, and I have an extra hotel room that could be available for student sharing. Please contact me if you are interested.

We are planning to accommodate 15 minute presentations as well as posters, time and space permitting. Please forward the title of your proposed paper or poster to Jenny Kahn via email by June 30th so she can begin to organize sessions. Anyone interested in organizing a thematic session should send her a proposed session title as well as titles for the proposed papers. JOB OPPORTUNITY - Archaeologist/Project Manager with SWCA Environmental Consultants

Location: Guam

Job Description: SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking to fill the position of a self-motivated, creative, and highly organized Archaeologist/Project Manager. This regular salaried position is located in SWCA`s Guam office, and will report to the SWCA Senior Archaeologist on Guam. The position will entail the conduct of cultural resource investigations; assisting the Senior Archaeologist with project coordination and quality control, and expanding SWCA's professional reputation in archaeological and historical consulting and research. This will include supervision of fieldwork and responsibility for report writing.

Responsibilities: Overall responsibilities include participation in preparation of proposals, research designs, and management plans; supervision of archaeological field crews; conducting archaeological fieldwork; managing project schedules and budgets; preparing technical reports; compliance with all SWCA health and safety procedures; and working closely with the SWCA Senior Archaeologist and other staff members to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in archaeology with at least five (5) years supervisory and field experience. Pacific islands experience in preferred. The candidate must have demonstrated exception verbal and written communication skills, a record of completing technical reports in a timely fashion, and ability to coordinate and supervise field personnel and resources within time and budgetary constraints. The ideal candidate must have the ability to prioritize and successfully support multiple concurrent projects and reporting deadlines, be flexible with changing work priorities, and work with minimal supervision. Experience with and knowledge of contracts and professional consulting is preferred. The selected candidate must have a demonstrated track record of working productively within a multi-organizational team, including SWCA staff, teaming partners, clients, and government officials.

The candidate must be proficient with MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat. Experience in the use of statistical and database management program is preferred. Knowledge and experience with geographic information systems software (GIS/GPS) Bilingual capability in East Asian and/or Pacific island languages is a plus.

The successful applicant must have current eligibility to work in the United States, and must either already reside on Guam or be willing to relocate to Guam.

New Job Posting

Haun & Associates seeks to hire immediately qualified archaeologists for inventory survey on the Island of Hawaii.
Starting date is April 1 and the project is expected to last for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
Minimum qualifications include a B.A. degree in Anthropology or Archaeology and at least two full years of field experience. Previous experience in Hawaii or elsewhere in the Pacific is highly desirable.

Work will be strenuous in very rugged terrain and the conditions will be hot and humid. Must be able to hike up to 5-7 miles per day carrying required gear. Employment requires a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Per diem and housing will be provided. Reasonable roundtrip airfare will be reimbursed upon satisfactory completion of project employment. Overtime work should be anticipated.
